SPIRIT, SOUL, AND BODY. – 1 THESSELONIANS 5:23.
‘And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.’
Briefly put: the body – dust to dust. The spirit – the breath of life that came from God goes back to God. The soul, which is become a separate entity with mind, will, and emotions ( that is us, the personality living in the body), goes to be with God in Christ Jesus and the unsaved go down into the grave ( not just a 6 foot hole) waiting for judgement day, after which they continue to exist in the lake of fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels (see Matthew 25:41).
Our body, the physical, carnal being.. made from the dust of the ground.
Genesis 2:7.’And the LORD God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and breathed (5301- NAPHACH- filled the body, kindled life) into his nostrils the breath of life (5397- NESHAMAH- vital breath, divine inspiration); and man became a living soul (5315- NEPESH- a living creature with mind, will, and emotions).’
Ecclesiastes 12:7. ‘Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit (7307- RUWACH- an exhalation [sensible or violent], give up breath, by resemblance, spirit, but only of a rational being [i.e. people]) shall return unto God who gave it.’
When the LORD God breathed into man, he breathed the spirit of life into man and imparted vitality to our mortal being so that we had a soul which consists of our mind, our will, and our emotions. By this God-given spirit of life, which is our spirit essence, we keep ourselves lined up with the will of God.
In Genesis three we find that Satan interrupted man’s spiritual relationship with God by causing man to consider his own flesh first and thereby satisfy his own soul with carnal needs and so becoming spiritually dead to the will of God. This has led to spiritual decay and also physical decay and the lifespan of the flesh of man can now never be eternal.
God does not repent of the gifts he has given, so he did not take the spirit of man back from him, the spirit of life, which we call the breath of life. Rather, through the blood of Jesus, God kept his people reconciled to himself. However, because evil had entered into the life of man he could not stay in the garden of Eden (an earthly representation of the Kingdom of God), so man was driven out.
Genesis 3:22,23. ‘And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken,’
From this time death came upon man (read Genesis 2:17). The spirit of man was no longer lined up with the Spirit of God from whence he received the breath of life. His soul was no longer walking in the ways of the Lord but rather his desires were now catering to his flesh. From this time on the life, health, and spirituality of man is in constant decline right to the last day. The only way up is to be born again in Jesus Christ the Righteous.
When man physically dies he does not simply cease to exist. He’s body is buried in the ground from whence it came. On the day of judgement that body is going to be raised up again (John 5:28,29). Not even the practice of cremation can prevent a person from standing before God on judgement day in his flesh. The unsaved man while stand there in all his nakedness and his life will be completely exposed. The bible says the soul of the buried body goes down into the grave and knows nothing until judgement day. The soul of the saved person goes straight to heaven by Jesus Christ.
Ecclesiastes 9:2-6.’All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead. For him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they anymore a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they anymore a portion forever in anything that is done under the sun.’
As we saw in Ecclesiastes 12:7 the spirit of man goes back to God who gave it. When we breath our last, that breath of life goes back to God who is all life. Life is substance and substance does not simply cease to exist. Our final exhalation goes back from whence it came (see John 19:30). There are no such thing as souls or little spirit breaths floating around looking for somewhere to go. The only kind of spirit being that is moving around unseen accept by some, are devil spirits with whom God says we have nothing to do (read Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
When we no longer live on this earth under the sun we no longer need to breathe, The soul that is saved is in heaven. Our life is in Christ Jesus. He is our life( Colossians 3:1-4). The soul that is unsaved is spiritually dead. His life’s breath has gone to God but he continues in his soul existence separated from God for ever, and will spend eternity in darkness in the lake of fire. His vitality, his divine inspiration, the breath of life is gone back to God.
When Jesus comes back all the saved souls that have gone on before will come back with him and receive their new glorified bodies in the twinkling of an eye. At the same time those of us who are alive and saved will also receive a new glorified body.
1Thessalonians 4:13-17. ‘But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep (saved people don’t actually die,we transfer from here to there), that you sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them that are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall arise first:Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.’
1 Corinthians 15:50-54.’Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.Behold, I show you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in a twinkling of an eye, at the last trump(7th trumpet..Rev.11:15): for the trumpet will sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.’
You will notice in both these scriptures, is a reference to the trump ,or trumpet, of God. That is the Last Trumpet to sound and it is all over.
Revelation11:15.And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thundering, and an earthquake, and great hail (Revelation 16:17-21).
There are many falsehoods abounding in the world today because of religious deception. This deception is so great that the Lord said, Matthew 24:21 ‘For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. V.22.And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.’
Man is focused these days on the sensationalism of the Mayan Calender and movies made about a dramatization of 2012. Most people will not even be ready with all this advanced warnings. How are you going to manage if the end of the world would come any time now, within this next twelve months. Will your breath of life go back to Him who gave it and you go into a Christless eternity? Or will you go on to be with the Lord, who is the source of all life, into the new heaven and the new earth where we do not need to breath as today because we are in Him and is in us. Unless your spirit of man is perfected by the word of God there will be no hope whatsoever. In this life alone you have an opportunity to humble yourselves, repenting of your sins and crying out to the living God for mercy and forgiveness. There is no such thing in the Holy Bible, the book of God, as purgatory or any other form of ‘second chance’. The time is now, while it is still called today. Be thou born again. In Jesus’ name. Amen. (John 12:50).
